Choose stabilizer by the garment and the finish you need. For buying, compare more than the product name. Check weight, dimensions, pack quantity and whether the material suits the sample you plan to sew.
Compare the three main choices
Cut away backing stays behind the design after excess material is trimmed. It can support embroidery on fabrics that need lasting support, including many stretch garments.
Tear away backing is removed around the design after sewing. It is often chosen for stable fabrics. Water soluble backing is removed using water, so the item must suit that process.

Check dimensions and quantities
A roll length does not tell you how many hooped pieces it will provide. Compare usable width, the size needed for your hoop and waste when cutting.
For sheets, check both sheet size and pack count. For cap backing, check the cap equipment and the shape you plan to use. Do not compare roll and sheet prices as if they contain equal usable material.
Buy a test quantity first
Use the same garment, design and thread you plan to sell. Follow the supply maker’s instructions and your machine guidance. Review the result after the intended care process.
Once the sample is right, record the exact product and size. This helps you reorder the same supply rather than choosing a similar name with a different weight.
Keep supplies separate from machine shipping

Can I replace every cut away backing with tear away?
No. Match the backing to the fabric, design and finish. Test the actual combination before changing a bulk order.
Is water soluble topping the same as backing?
No. Check the intended role of the exact product. A surface topping does not automatically provide the support needed underneath.
